Louisiana Nutrition and Metabolic Health CE Requirement (SB 14 / Act 463)
Louisiana requires physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses practicing in specified areas to complete a minimum of one hour of continuing education on nutrition and metabolic health every four years, under Senate Bill 14, enacted as Act 463 and signed June 20, 2025.
The requirement is scope-based, not license-based. Whether it applies to you depends on your practice area, not on holding a Louisiana license alone.
Who is covered
Physicians and physician assistants. The requirement applies to those practicing family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology, dermatology, pulmonology, surgery, immunology, hematology, obstetrics, and gynecology. Enacted at R.S. 37:1270(A)(8), administered by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
Advanced practice registered nurses. The requirement applies to APRNs practicing family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, or gynecology. Enacted at R.S. 37:920(G), administered by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
The distinction most summaries miss
The two lists are not the same length, and the difference runs opposite to what most clinicians assume.
For physicians and PAs, the named list runs to eighteen specialties and reaches most of clinical medicine, including surgery, dermatology, and neurology. In practice, a physician asking whether Act 463 applies to them will usually find that it does.
For APRNs, the list is five practice areas, all primary care or women's health. An APRN practicing in psychiatry, cardiology, oncology, dermatology, or acute care is not named in the APRN provision, even though a physician in those same specialties is named in the physician provision.
That asymmetry is the single most consequential fact in Act 463 for advanced practice nurses, and it is the reason "does this apply to me" cannot be answered from license type.
What the statute sets, and what it does not
Act 463 sets a floor of one contact hour every four years. It does not cap the hours, and it does not prescribe a detailed content outline the way some mandate statutes do.

How this compares to Texas SB 25
Louisiana and Texas both enacted nutrition CE mandates in June 2025, and they are frequently discussed together, but they are structurally different requirements.
Louisiana is narrow by specialty and active now. Texas is broad by profession — reaching physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and dietitians — and its hour count and content are still pending board rulemaking, with the requirement attaching to renewal applications filed on or after January 1, 2027.
A clinician licensed in both states owes two separate analyses, not one.

Frequently asked questions
Does Act 463 apply to all Louisiana physicians? No, but nearly. The statute names eighteen specialties. Physicians outside those areas are not covered, though the breadth of the list means most practicing physicians are.
