When to use this playbook

  • You need to determine whether your Florida RN or LPN renewal requires 24 hours, a first-renewal course set, or prorated hours.
  • You are unsure whether “16 general hours” applies to your current renewal cycle.
  • You need your exact expiration date rather than a general April or July deadline.
  • You want to verify that a course qualifies for a Florida mandatory topic before paying for it.
  • You need to complete CE Broker, background screening, and license-renewal steps in the right order.

This playbook focuses on RN and LPN renewal. Florida APRNs may have additional controlled-substance prescribing requirements and should also review the Florida controlled-substance prescribing CE update.

What success looks like

You finish with four verified facts: your personal expiration date, your correct CE-hour target, the mandatory topics due in this cycle, and confirmation that every completion appears in CE Broker before you submit the renewal application.

Florida RN and LPN renewal math at a glance

Renewal situation Starting CE calculation What changes the calculation
Standard full-biennium RN or LPN renewal 24 total hours Domestic violence adds 2 hours every third biennium, bringing that cycle to 26 hours.
First renewal after examination during the current biennium 9 mandatory hours; no general hours Includes medical errors, Florida laws and rules, workplace impairment, human trafficking, and HIV/AIDS.
First renewal by endorsement after taking the examination in another state during the current biennium 9 mandatory hours; no general hours The examination date—not merely the Florida endorsement date—determines this exemption.
Short initial license without the examination-based exemption 1 hour for each month the Florida license was valid The prorated total must include the mandatory topics applicable to the license.
Qualifying specialty-certified nurse May be exempt from most CE The 2-hour human trafficking requirement still applies, and the exemption must be reported through the state tracking system.

The Florida Board of Nursing’s current framework is a 24-month renewal cycle, but “24 hours” is not the correct answer for every first renewal or exemption case. Florida Board of Nursing continuing education FAQs

Step 1: Identify your license and renewal path

Action: Confirm whether you hold an RN, LPN, or APRN license; whether this is your first Florida renewal; whether you entered by examination or endorsement; and when you passed the licensing examination. Allow about five minutes if these details are available in your MQA account.

Expected outcome: You can place yourself into one row of the renewal matrix instead of automatically purchasing 24 hours.

Gotcha: “First Florida renewal” does not automatically mean “exempt from general CE.” The examination-based exemption applies when you were licensed by examination during the current biennium, or endorsed into Florida after taking the examination in another state during that same biennium. Other endorsement cases may be prorated by the number of months the Florida license was valid.

Details to collect before calculating your hours

  • Your Florida profession and license number.
  • Your initial Florida issue date and current expiration date.
  • Whether Florida licensed you by examination or endorsement.
  • The date you passed the NCLEX or other applicable examination.
  • Whether you hold a qualifying national specialty certification.
  • Whether your license is active, inactive, delinquent, or multistate.

Step 2: Find your renewal cycle and exact expiration date

Action: Sign in to the Florida MQA Online Services Portal and record the expiration date attached to your license. The date on your individual record is more useful than trying to infer your group from another nurse’s deadline.

Expected outcome: You know the final date of your current biennium and can work backward for CE, reporting, fingerprinting, and renewal.

Gotcha: The “Renew My License” option appears no later than 90 days before expiration. Not seeing the option several months earlier does not mean your license record is wrong.

How do I know which Florida renewal cycle I am in?

Your renewal cycle is the 24-month period ending on the expiration date shown in your MQA account and electronic license. Use that date to determine your current cycle; do not rely solely on your original license issue date, workplace reminders, or another nurse’s deadline. CE Broker tracks the courses assigned to the cycle, but the state license record supplies the operative expiration date.

When does my Florida RN license expire?

Florida RNs renew in three groups. As of August 25, 2026, the Florida Board of Nursing publishes the following current expiration dates:

License group Published expiration
RN Group 3 April 30, 2027, at midnight Eastern Time
RN Group 1 April 30, 2028, at midnight Eastern Time
RN Group 2 July 31, 2028, at midnight Eastern Time
Current LPN cycle July 31, 2027, at midnight Eastern Time

Published dates change as cycles close, so confirm your personal record before acting. Florida RN renewal requirements and Florida LPN renewal requirements

Step 3: Calculate the standard renewal hours

Action: Start with the 24-hour biennial total, subtract the mandatory topics due inside that total, and use general nursing CE for the remaining hours.

Expected outcome: You know both your total requirement and how many hours can come from general nursing topics.

Gotcha: Domestic violence is outside the standard 24-hour total when it is due. A nurse in that cycle needs 26 total hours, not 24.

How many CE hours do Florida RNs need to renew?

Florida RNs and LPNs generally need 24 contact hours during each full 24-month renewal period. The 24 hours include 2 hours of prevention of medical errors, 2 hours of Florida laws and rules, 2 hours of human trafficking, and—every other biennium—2 hours of recognizing impairment in the workplace.

Topic Hours Frequency Inside the 24-hour total?
Prevention of medical errors 2 Every renewal Yes
Florida laws and rules 2 Every renewal Yes
Human trafficking 2 Every renewal Yes
Recognizing impairment in the workplace 2 Every other renewal Yes
Domestic violence 2 Every third biennium No; added to the 24 hours
HIV/AIDS 1 One time before first renewal Handled under the first-renewal rules

How many general CE hours do Florida nurses need?

Most nurses need either 16 or 18 general hours within the 24-hour total. When workplace impairment is due, four 2-hour mandatory courses use 8 hours, leaving 16 general hours. When impairment is not due, the three every-renewal courses use 6 hours, leaving 18 general hours.

CE Broker should be used to confirm which rotating topic is assigned to the current cycle. The permanent rule is the 24-hour total—not that every nurse always needs exactly 16 general hours.

Step 4: Apply the first-renewal exemption correctly

Action: Compare your examination date, Florida licensure method, issue date, and expiration date against the first-biennium rules. Allow five to ten minutes for this check before buying courses.

Expected outcome: You determine whether you need the 9-hour mandatory set or a prorated total based on months licensed.

Gotcha: The exemption is from general CE hours, not from the required Florida topics.

How much CE do I need for my first Florida nursing license renewal?

If you were initially licensed by examination during the current biennium, your first renewal requires 9 hours:

  • 2 hours of prevention of medical errors.
  • 2 hours of Florida laws and rules.
  • 2 hours of recognizing impairment in the workplace.
  • 2 hours of human trafficking.
  • 1 hour of HIV/AIDS.

The same 9-hour path applies when Florida licensed you by endorsement during the current biennium and you took the examination in another state during that biennium. You are exempt from general CE hours in either case.

When is a first renewal prorated instead?

If you endorsed into Florida based on an older examination or do not meet the examination-based exemption, your initial license may require one CE hour for each month it was valid. The applicable mandatory courses must be included in that total. The distinction that usually changes the answer is whether the examination occurred during the current renewal period—not simply whether the Florida license is new. Florida Board of Nursing first-biennium rules

Step 5: Check which rotating topics are due

Action: Review your CE Broker transcript for workplace impairment, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS before selecting a bundle or individual courses.

Expected outcome: You buy the topics assigned to your current cycle without confusing an every-renewal course with an every-other-renewal course.

Gotcha: A prior completion does not mean a topic is permanently finished. Human trafficking repeats every renewal, workplace impairment repeats every other renewal, and domestic violence repeats every third biennium.

The three schedules buyers most often confuse

  • Human trafficking: 2 hours every biennial renewal.
  • Recognizing impairment in the workplace: 2 hours every other renewal.
  • Domestic violence: 2 hours every third biennium and added on top of the standard 24 hours.

Step 6: Verify course approval before purchasing

Action: Search CE Broker for the exact course and provider, then confirm the profession, subject area, hours, and approval path.

Expected outcome: The course is accepted in the correct category rather than merely appearing as unrelated general education.

Gotcha: National nursing accreditation can qualify general CE, but it does not automatically turn a course into a Florida-approved mandatory-topic course.

How do I know if a course is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing?

  1. Open the Florida nursing course search in CE Broker.
  2. Search for the exact course title, not just the education company.
  3. Confirm that the course is listed for your profession and required subject area.
  4. Verify the number of contact hours and completion method.
  5. Check whether the provider reports completion automatically or requires self-reporting.

Florida requires mandatory courses to come from a Florida Board of Nursing-approved provider, except for human trafficking, which may use another provider if the course meets the statutory content criteria. General hours may come from a state or national organization empowered to accredit nursing continuing education. Florida Board of Nursing course-acceptance guidance

Renew Now CE is the best fit when

  • You are an RN or LPN on a standard renewal path and want general hours and Florida mandatory topics in one place.
  • You prefer a one-time purchase instead of an annual CE membership or auto-renewing subscription.
  • You want self-paced courses with saved progress, completion certificates, and automatic CE Broker reporting for eligible Florida completions.
  • You would rather work from a mandate-aligned package than research and purchase each topic separately.

As of August 25, 2026, the Renew Now CE Florida RN/LPN package costs $35 as a one-time purchase and includes 27 contact hours. It includes general CE and the periodic HIV/AIDS and domestic-violence topics so nurses can complete the courses applicable to their current cycle. Renew Now CE is Florida Board of Nursing Provider #50-18921 and reports eligible completions to CE Broker within 24 hours.

Renew Now CE’s 27-hour RN/LPN package is not a fit when

  • Your first-renewal exemption leaves you needing only the 9-hour mandatory set and you want to purchase only those hours.
  • You qualify for the specialty-certification CE exemption and need only the remaining non-exempt topic.
  • You are an APRN who also needs the separate 3-hour safe and effective prescription of controlled substances course.
  • Your CE Broker record shows that only one isolated course remains outstanding.

Step 7: Complete CE and confirm CE Broker reporting

Action: Finish the assigned courses, download each certificate, and check CE Broker after the provider’s reporting window. Course time will generally correspond to the awarded contact hours; allow additional time for assessments and account administration.

Expected outcome: CE Broker displays the correct course titles, completion dates, providers, subject areas, and hours before renewal.

Gotcha: Automatic reporting does not eliminate the need to review your record. A name or license-number mismatch can leave a completion unassigned even when the course itself qualifies.

  1. Download and retain every certificate immediately after completion.
  2. Allow up to 24 hours for eligible Renew Now CE completions to appear.
  3. Open your free CE Broker account and review the course history.
  4. Confirm that mandatory topics were applied to the correct categories.
  5. Resolve missing records with the provider before submitting renewal.

The Florida Department of Health checks the electronic CE record during renewal. A complete record permits the renewal process to continue; an incomplete record prompts the licensee to enter or resolve missing hours. A paid CE Broker account is not required for Florida nursing renewal.

Step 8: Complete background screening and submit renewal

Action: During the renewal window, confirm your fingerprint status, complete or retain the required screening, verify CE Broker, and submit the application through MQA.

Expected outcome: Florida receives the CE record, application, fee, and background-screening result needed to approve the renewal.

Gotcha: Since July 1, 2025, health care practitioners renewing Florida licenses must comply with the state’s fingerprint-based background-screening requirements. A license cannot be approved until the screening requirement is complete.

  1. Check your fingerprint or retention status before the license deadline.
  2. If a new screening is required, initiate it through CHAI and use an approved Livescan provider.
  3. Retain the Transaction Control Number supplied by the Livescan provider.
  4. Confirm that your CE Broker record is complete.
  5. Open “Renew My License” in MQA, answer the renewal questions, and submit the required fee.
  6. Retrieve the renewed electronic license from the MQA dashboard after approval.

Do not leave fingerprinting until the expiration date; screening is separate from course completion and can delay approval even when every CE hour is finished. FL HealthSource background-screening instructions and Florida nursing renewal process

Final pre-submission checklist

  • Your MQA account shows the expected license and expiration date.
  • You used the standard, first-renewal, prorated, or certification-exemption path that applies to you.
  • Your total includes domestic violence outside the 24 hours if it is due.
  • Each mandatory course has the correct Florida approval path.
  • Every completion appears under the correct license in CE Broker.
  • You retained certificates even when the provider reported automatically.
  • Your fingerprint screening or retention requirement is complete.
  • You submitted the application before midnight Eastern Time on the expiration date.

Frequently asked questions

Do Florida nurses need 24 or 27 CE hours?

Most Florida RNs and LPNs need 24 hours for a standard full-biennium renewal, not 27. A domestic-violence cycle raises the total to 26 because those 2 hours are additional to the standard 24. Twenty-seven-hour packages commonly include the one-time 1-hour HIV/AIDS course as well, making the package broad enough to contain first-renewal and rotating topics. Your actual requirement still depends on your renewal history. Florida Statute 464.013

Am I exempt from general CE hours for my first Florida renewal?

You are exempt from general CE if you were licensed by examination during the current biennium, or if you entered Florida by endorsement after taking the examination in another state during that biennium. You still need the 9-hour mandatory set. If you endorsed based on an older examination, your requirement may instead be prorated at one hour for each month the initial Florida license was valid. Florida LPN first-renewal rules

Does CE Broker determine which Florida renewal cycle I am in?

No. Your Florida MQA license record supplies your expiration date and therefore identifies the current renewal period. CE Broker tracks the CE categories and completions attached to that period. Use the two systems together: verify the date in MQA, then use CE Broker to see which courses have been credited and which requirements remain. Florida Board of Nursing CE tracking system

Can an ANCC-accredited course satisfy every Florida nursing mandate?

No. ANCC accreditation can qualify nursing courses for general CE, but Florida-specific mandatory topics generally must be offered by a Florida Board of Nursing-approved provider. Human trafficking is the exception: the provider does not have to hold Florida Board approval if the course meets the content criteria in Florida law. Verify the exact course and category in CE Broker before purchasing.

Does Renew Now CE report Florida nursing courses to CE Broker?

Yes. Renew Now CE reports eligible Florida completions to CE Broker within 24 hours and makes completion certificates available for the nurse’s records. Its Florida RN/LPN package is a one-time purchase with no subscription, but nurses should still review CE Broker after reporting and complete only the cycle-specific courses that apply to their license. Renew Now CE’s CE Broker provider profile

What if the “Renew My License” option is not showing in MQA?

The renewal option normally appears no later than 90 days before the license expiration date. If you are outside that window, check again closer to expiration. If you are already within the window, confirm that you selected the correct license and that your MQA account information is current. The missing renewal button does not change your published expiration date or extend the deadline. Florida Board of Nursing online renewal instructions
